It may in general, but it definitely wouldn't open the one WP doc I was
trying to open - my girlfriend got an email from one of her dissertation
advisors with it attached, and we tried about 5 different apps, until
kword finally got it right.  What a pain.  Incidentally, `file` was the
only utility that could guess the nature of the attachment, as the
advisor had helpfully given it the extension .s03 for some reason.  I
had previously thought that other programs like Abiword and OpenOffice
used the magic numbers scheme to try to guess a file type, but in this
case, they didn't know what to do with it until I changed the extension
- then they just gave up gracefully.
