What a pain. Incidentally, `file` was the only utility that could guess the nature of the attachment, as the advisor had helpfully given it the extension .s03 for some reason. I had previously thought that other programs like Abiword and OpenOffice used the magic numbers scheme to try to guess a file type, but in this case, they didn't know what to do with it until I changed the extension - then they just gave up gracefully. *sigh* -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ,''`.
