What's the best audio software to set up on a 32-bit processor?
Hi everyone
I'm trying to build a reliable semi-pro studio to expand on what I
can do in Apple's Logic Express, or make the decision to buy a new
mac and run Logic, though I'd rather not. All this before I buy an
appropriate audio interface, better microphones and monitors etc.
Environment: I've installed Debian 6.0.0 on it's own 2006 686 box
with a 160Gb drive, 1 Gb RAM, dual 3Gb processors and an ALSA based
audio system, which as far as I can make out is definitely enough to
see what's going on, and so far System Monitor tells me I haven't
caused any system stress. I can crawl around a terminal and usually
get things to work after some fiddling. I'd like to stay with Debian,
I also like Knoppix. I've looked at a couple of 'run-from-DVD' audio
systems but don't want to rely on that route.
I have the following working together: Jack Control, Rosegarden,
Hydrogen drums, Audacity, hexter, Horgand and some found audio
samples from the web. Also wine, so far untested. But this is now
becoming unstable. So I'm thinking about the following:
Get snd-rtctimer installed to control the system timer (will it solve
the problem)? Or ...
Install a different kernel - that will be a challenge for me. Or ...
Find a Debian release (upgradeable) specifically for multimedia and
start again (remember everything is 32-bit, will Studio 64 work)? Or ...
Use a different set of audio software? I'd don't need to print scores
now but that might come soon. Or ...
Buy components to build me an up-to-date computer? Or ...
Do something else that I've missed completely.
Also are there other linux audio groups out there? Is this the right
forum for this kind of question?
Any advice will be really appreciated.
Charlie
