Thanks for your replies, however I should have RTFMed a bit better as 
shortly after posting I found the excellent HOWTO for toolchain 
building at:

http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/Toolchains#Roll-your-own

So I made my own patched kernel using -rc9's config and adding the SGI 
option. udev didn't see the device but the modules loaded correctly 
manually. ALSA and OSS did not see the device.

Now that I've seen today's IP32 snapshot, I'll try that kernel instead 
and report.
