I probably wasn't clear enough here: help regarding SGI support is
extremely welcome.  I can make some hardware available to people
interested in helping with this.

That turned out to be a memory problem.  Both machines are working now
with the etch kernel.  I also tried to boot a daily d-i image and it
failed.  I need to build a new cross compiler and see whether a kernel
from git works.  However, I've no idea when I'll get to it.  Like I
said above, help with this is welcome.
