So I'm not sure what we can do about this problem.

But maybe you can do me a favour (Jim, Michael). Can you test whether
CoLo is able to load a kernel via the network (either NFS or tftp).
In other words, is it only the 2.6 kernel that doesn't work or CoLo
too?

I've been doing some testing and the problem is in the installer, not in the kernel.

If I boot the 2700 over NFS with the Etch installer everything works fine as long as I have my PCI serial card in the slot. It makes no difference whether the serial port is being used as a console or not (it works in both scenarios). If the kernel is not using the serial port as a console I get no output over the serial port as expected.

If I remove the PCI card and try again something inside the installer root image stops. I've verified this by adding a "putlcd" early in the /sbin/init script inside the installer root image. The "putlcd" is hit but the installer never gets as far as configuring the network interface.

So it looks like maybe something inside the installer hunts around for a tty when it decides the console is not one.

Any ideas Martin?

P.
