I checked the bootlogs once more and found this:
Found DS1981U NIC registration number 8c:7f:01:00:70:5e, CRC 39.                
Ethernet address is 08:00:69:05:19:ef.                                          
eth0: link down                                                                 
eth0: Using PHY 0, vendor 0x2000, model 0, rev 3.                               
eth0: IOC3 SSRAM has 128 kbyte.                                                 

It's the ethernet interface that was used for netbooting
the kernel, so I'm pretty sure it's working...
