I had exactly the same problem, and this is how I solved it (I think
I've talked about it a few months ago on the list). Seems that this is a
weird but working solution :)

You were right doing that. The kernel on this site is always newer than
the Debian FTP's one.

You can get it working easily if you grab the package on
http://people.debian.org/~joss/mips/ ( a friend of mine who's got the
exact same hardware as we do) and the XF86Config-4 on
http://honk.physik.uni-konstanz.de/linux-mips/xfree86/cfgs/XF86Config-4

That should get you started.
