I know that a Sun Sparc 10 I used to work with, would take a serial
terminal powering off to be the same signal as 'break', so you had to
unplug the cable, before you turned off the terminal, or the machine
would drop to the firmware prompt (from which typing 'go' would get it
back to running where it was again I think.).

Maybe the SGI is the same way.  It could just be that some terminals
have unpredictable behaviour when powering off.
