You will find the same behavior with many Openfirmware-based
machines. When most serial terminals are powered down they send a
break signal. The host's firmware intercepts this and drops to the
firmware prompt. The dirty fix is to always unplug the serial cable
prior to powering off your terminal. The best fix is to read the
terminal's manual and figure out how to disable the
break-on-disconnect feature. I can't count the number of times I
have accidentally halted these sorts of servers in years gone by.
