yeah, that's one way.
but also git makes noise when you add trailing whitespaces, `git diff`
showing red spaces, etc.
At least, ISTR....

It's not weird for debian to carry patches nearly forever...
Though nice to see you're keen on reducing the delta between upstream
and that you're in good relationship with them
