A source package is required so that the binary packages can be
automatically generated for different architectures.  The source package
usually means *.dsc + *.orig.tar.gz + *.debian.tar.gz but you should
check the policy for all the possible variations.

lintian -EvIL +pedantic *.dsc

is a good command to get started.

That might be a challenge since it's just a specialized field. I
personally try to only package software that I use to ensure that it
gets tested.
