Probably x86 vs. x86_64 issue.  You might try using qemubuilder (or just 
qemu) to compile on other architectures.

IIRC, x86_64 requires all shared code to be compiled as PIC (Position 
Independent Code) -- I'm not entirely sure why x86 doesn't.
