It would be possible, but not desirable IMHO, and probably not in the
opinion of many people here.  Documentation files are rarely used :)

Seriously, though, xpdf is linked with zlib anyway, and transparently
handles .pdf.gz, and gv handles .ps.gz.

How much can one possibly read :)
