Same as any other package in that situation.

It is one of the jobs of the package maintainer to deal with bugs,
either by communicating with upstream to get them fixed, or fixing
them directly in cases where upstream can't or won't. (And then
hopefully continuing the conversation with upstream by discussing the
patch with them.)

If the package has no active upstream, that doesn't relieve the
package maintainer of the responsibility to deal with bugs. Only
ceasing maintainership of the package ends that responsibility.
