It's not negative -- and every other aspect you mentioned is also true. What 
Rene meant is that this notation (Debian version including a dot ".") is 
reserved for non-maintainer uploads, NMUs.

Since you are the maintainer of the package, you should always increment the 
Debian version number by one, no matter how minor your changes to the package 
are.

Your next version should be -3, then. Some reading:
