Instead of compiling, you could simply copy the binary into place under
the debian/ directory.  If you do that, set the architecture in the
control file to, e.g., "i386" instead of "any".

If you have binaries for more than one arch, it can still be done.
(e.g. `dpkg --print-architecture`).
