Another way is to use pbuilder (or a selfmade chroot).
First you go and look what Upstream says you need. Transform that into
the build-depends. Try it with pbuilder. If it breaks you are missing
something. Do this until it builds fine.
And/Or go and build it on your (complete) system. If it does not fail you
can look at the Depends it has and transform that into Build-Depends.
There is not "the way" to find this stuff. :)
