Packages with symlinks and CVS

I have a package which I am trying to Debianise. The upstream source
contains lots of symlinks. I usually use the CVS suite to do my
packaging, but by default, CVS does not handle symlinks. I am loathe
to set the PreservePermissions config file flag, as that will be far
more wide-reaching than I want.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how this can be handled gracefully?

   Julian
