If you do some giggling in the web archive of this mailing list this
will uncover some past discussions with Ignacio Valdez.  As far as I
remember the problem of his Debian packages was, that these are not
built using the required way to use a Debian source package and create
the binary packages using the usual packaging tools.  So these are not
distributable by Debian and as far as I remember Ignacio did not
considered changing the way he was building the packages.  In other
words this means that the result of his work might worth looking at but
we need to do things from scratch anyway.

I'd perfectly welcome if Ignacio would join our policy compliant
packaging effort.
