Hello Roy,

this sounds interesting :)

The way the selection works is that students select or propose a project, and
potential mentors make a private ranking of the students according to their
skills, their project, and the adequation between them. In parallel, Google
looks how many applications an organization had, and uses this as a metric to
decide how many projects they can start. Last year, for Debian we sorted the
student list according to the rankings, selected as many student-project
pairs as the numbers of projects allocated by Google, and then assigned a mentor
to the student.

All of this to explain that I can not promise to be your mentor: you will have
to convince the other Debian potential mentors that your application is good,
and on top of this, if there is somebody else with a good application on the
same project, you will have to be better.

So here are some advices about how to get the best chances :)

In the application to be posted in the SoC web interface
(http://socghop.appspot.com), please present yourself as you did in this email,
and explain briefly with your own words why you think that the project you
selected is interesting. Then develop your ideas on how to acheive it, and
conclude by explaining why and how you think that you will manage to end up
your project with something concrete. Ideally, be precise and concise.

I do not know how the interface works for the students, but if there are no
automatic notifications, then please monitor your application page frequently.
You may have questions from the people listed as mentors on our Debian wiki
page (http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2009). While they are not necessarly
interested in mentoring you in particular, we will have to collectively decide
who gets a project, so they will participate to your ranking… be good in
your answers! Most of them do not have a biological background, so take this
into account when answering, and when writing your application.

Good luck, and do not hesitate to ask as many questions as you like on this
list.

Have a nice day,
