I attached to this mail a .wml file that would be used as a Debian-Med
news, and that could be used as a template to be posted on relevant
newsgroups such as bionet.software. I welcome comments, and would like
to commit it shortly after Debian is accepted as a mentor organisation.

The Debian project has been accepted as a mentor organisation for the <a href="http://code.google.com/soc/2008";>Google Summer of Code 2008</a>, and two of the <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2008";>proposed projects</a> are relevant to the field of bioinformatics.

<p>In the <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2008/biodata";>Biological databases manager</a> project, it is proposed to students to build an application to automate the downloading, upgrading and indexing of databases such as GenBank, miRbase, Jaspar, REbase,… The database manager will take advantage of the bioinformatics programs packaged in Debian.</p>

<p>In the <a href="http://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2008/cran2deb";>cran2deb</a> project, it is proposed to students to generate Debian packages for <a href="http://www.r-project.org/";>GNU R</a> from package sources. This project would allow the <a href="http://www.bioconductor.org/";>Bioconductor</a> R packages to be distributed in the Debian format.</p>

<p>Debian-Med will provide mentorship for the <em>Biological databases manager</em> project, and Dirk Eddelbuttel is the mentor of the <em>cran2deb</em> project. Debian-Med encourages students to apply to one or the other project.</p>
