Oh wait, I see you followed my advice and used text/ for the MIME type
and the chemical/* types only seem to be aliases. In this case you
should add:

<alias type="chemical/njplot"/> (diito for mase)

to your freedesktop.org XML snippet. And you MUST add the top-class, if
they belong to a top-class (which seems to be the case for me):

<sub-class-of type="text/plain"/>

The reasons for the latter are described in this short discussion:

Otherwise slow detection will fail to detect the correct MIME type.

BTW: You can test your definitions with the gnomevfs-info program (slow
detection is done via the -s switch).
