RE: Working on BioImage Suite 2.5 beta source tree

Andreas and others,

Thank you interest in BioImage Suite. My suggestion is the following.

1. With respect to issues of compiling/packaging BioImage Suite I would like
to move the discussion to the BioImage Suite Forum itself -- I have set up a
special board for this purpose, the URL is below

http://research.yale.edu/bioimagesuite/forum/index.php?board=12.0

This will our discussion on this topic at the "right place" to benefit other
users of BioImage Suite who perhaps are not related to Debian-Med. You will
need to register on the forum in order to post.

2. My only other request is for those of you from the Debian-Med group who
are interested to either post on the forum or send me a short private e-mail
some information about themselves. Either a URL to a home page or a short
description of your current work/interests will be fine. This will enable us
on this side to have a sense of whom we are working with.

We are very interested in interacting with the Debian-Med project, my only
reservation at this point as expressed in a private exchange with Andreas is
that much of the test-data for BioImage Suite is (for now) not
redistributable as it comes with various strings attached (code is easier to
redistribute than data). A good first step, as Andreas suggested, would be
to "start working out an unofficial Debian package" that could be downloaded
from our webpage. With that said, on at least two most common architectures
(i386, x86_64) we can once such packages are generated, test them here at
Yale and make sure that they work as well as our other binary releases.

I would prefer (as Andreas mentioned) that administrative issues w.r.t. to
inclusion of BioImage Suite in Debian should probably be handled in a
separate e-mail list/or via private e-mail, but my hunch that we are early
in the process and such discussion maybe premature -- I think accomplishing
this first step will keep us busy for a while.

Subject: Working on BioImage Suite 2.5 beta source tree

Hello,

I've got a private e-mail from Xenophon Papademetris of BioImageSuite
who gave reasons for working on Debian packaging of BioImageSuite
version 2.5 in a closed circle instead of open discussion on the
Debian-Med mailing list. Even if the Software is GPLed it sounds
reasonable to regard his wish. Xenophon wanted to create a mailing
list for this purpose and I just want to ask everybody who is
interested, willing and can spend a certain amount of time to
work on this to send me or Xenophon an e-mail. This should make
sure that we do not miss any medical imaging expert hanging around
on this list. I'm personally not able to spend the amount of
time to do all the work but I'm definitely would help out in
some parts.

So please volunteers hands up to get this nice piece of software
included into Lenny release.

Kind regards

           Andreas.
