Yes, you're right - and upstream are aware of the issue of sonames.  The
problem lies in the fact that they are using CMake (www.cmake.org) for
the build system, and CMake does not support sonames when linking shared
libraries.

I am currently looking at how much work is involved in adding soname
support to CMake.  If I can add it, we will push versioning back
upstream.  In the meantime we will have to co-ordinate this manually.
