After discussion on #debian-python, I tend to think that a safer course of 
action is to create a test suite before the scripts. Once the testsuite is 
reasonably complete and passes on python2.7, then progressively migrating the 
scripts to be 2.7-3.2 compatible can be done safely.

This work currently resides on the pytests branch:
