I have now investigated the problem further.
I don't think it is NetworkManager at fault or gnome for that matter.
NM seems to do what it is supposed to do or rather instructed. In this
case do not allow live user "user" to modify any setting.
Further investigation reveals that there is or seems to be a policy in
place that for some reason stop any modification to the WIFI network
via NM.
Also when i insert a USB stick into the running live system, it is not
possible to mount it. Even when the file manager is explicitly asked
to mount the file system on the USB stick it will not do it.
the response is:
User not authorised.
I don't know if it is the group memberships of live user or the
Policykit that is wrongly configured.
If I run gnome-control-center as root I can configure network and
select my WIFI network and a dialog ask for network password. But no
connection is established with WIFI network.
