vmware has, strangely, always worked.

I've added a force_load ide-generic in the live hook. So, as of revision
1985 of live-initramfs, this should be solved for both you and Erik
Christiansen.

If you are eager to verify this, you can use a snapshot build of it from
http://live.debian.net/debian-snapshots/.
