thanks for these suggestions. 

Some other quick suggestions:

 * Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 11~?) → Build-Depends:  debhelper-
   compat (= 11) and rm debian/compat.

please don't (yet). According to discussion over IRC this still have some issues (in old Ubuntu and in stretch backports if I remember correctly).
