The purpose of the GPL is to ensure some rights to the user, not given
to him by the copyright laws (such as free use, free modification, and
so on). The purpose of the GPL has nothing to do with the author, unless
the desire of the author is to ensure these rights to every other user.

I want people to have free software, so I have to give up part of my
control on my software. Note that if I am the author of the software I
use, I can also licence this software in an other way (e.g. proprietary
and closed source).

By ensuring every user has these rights, you ensure that you, as a user,
also have these rights. Of course, to get some freedom, you have to make
some compromise. This has been told many times on this list.
