not (yet) avail in bpo, unfortunatly - I'd be eager to upgrade too, for same
reason.

But I've managed for a reasonable tradeoff: in xorg.conf set 
  Modes "1280x800" "1024x768"
then when on 1024x768 use xrandr (stock in Etch is fine) to switch to same 
mode, make virtual = real screens. 
Do the converse after switching to LFP.

maybe. Unfortunatly there's no guarantee here, some machines seems to have
BIOS tricks for that that only the Windows driver knows how to tickle.

... talking about Acer's and Philips' nb though, with i810.
