Wireless card

hey everybody. I have the dreaded broadcom card. I got it to show up using the latest kernel from backports.org . However  I cant get it to connect  to any wireless networks including  an unprotected 1 and a wep access pt for which I have the key.  Does anybody has any experience with this?

iwconfig gives this:debian:~# iwconfig

eth0      no wireless extensions.
