Suppose /usr/share/doc/pcmciautils/mini-howto.txt.gz doesn't help.

I only have a modem card in my socket. When it boots it sometimes comes
up assigned to ttyS1 and sometimes ttyS3 (if I remember correctly) and I
have to manually change /etc/ppp/peers/provider to the correct setting.

Maybe compare the configs, modules, with Suse and see what the
differences are?
