Debian is a little more difficult then some distributions in the beginning, 
but if you think you know enough to try it, the worst you end up doing is 
reinstalling with a different distribution.  Be prepared when you first boot 
debian, it will drop you to a console unless you install all a desktop 
environment.

256MB of ram is not a problem.  I have a samba server running on a P2 iwth 
128MB of ram.
