First you can try to start just xinit, maybe with some debugging options. man xinit and docs in /usr/share/doc/xserver-... will have more info on debugging and you can also check the log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log)

At start-up you should see a menu with something like:

	Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.15-1-686
	Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.15-1-686 (recovery mode)

you can use the arrows to pick the one you need.
