xorg becomes unbearable slow after compiling custom kernel.

Hi all. I don't know if this is a kernel thing or a laptop thing but i figuerd i would try here. I've been a debian user for about 8 months now, and i've always used the pre-built kernels from unstable. Well, i've been messing with the idea of hibernation on my laptop. I read up on the mail listings and found out i had to recompile with the suspend2 kernel patch.

compiling was clean and done right......the debian way :-) i inserted the patch and figured this was a good time to tone down my kernel so it was a bit smaller and a better fit for my machine. it's an older machine but it suits my needs. especially with icewm. it's a gateway solo 1400 it uses the savage video driver, and i haven't changed my x configureation since before this new kernel.

anyway i deselected most of the drivers i KNEW i wouldn't need like nvidia and ati support and such, but mostly i really didn't remove anything that looked like it would be harmful to the system.

anyway, gdm starts without a hitch, but as soon as i log in i see i have 100% processor usage (i have gkrellm at startup) and the system is basically unresponsive. the mouse will move, about every 8 seconds, and i lose small blocks in my wallpaper. At least i can boot to my stock kernel :-) I love debian

I'm running unstable with icewm. Have any ideas??? thanks for the help.
