Re: kde and gnome not wokring
I am using testing.
kdm is set to automatically start but when ever it goes to start i get a message this message
apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03(Driver version 1.16ac)
apm: overriden by ACPI
i was using kdm fine up until last week until i tried out gdm and then decided to go back to kdm.
when i try to maunally start kdm /etc/init.d/kdm start it says that kdm is already running but ALT+F7 doesnt show anything.
i have tried stop and starting kdm also and ive even tried reverting back to gdm but it doesnt work.

More info needed. Are you saying that you don't automatically start kdm?
Or are you saying that you boot to the command line, then try to start
kdm?

'it' being dmesg? That part of the log might help. There is a problem
with the runlevel management of kdm/gdm that can result in neither being
initiated, I've seen this. The way I managed it was to use sysv-rc-conf.

If you no longer need gdm, then do
# aptitude purge gdm
In addition, use sysv-rc-conf (or similar) to ensure that it isn't being
started.
BTW, the kde meta-package isn't necessary for the essentials of kde. I
only use kde-core and add any other required packages separately. Ditto
Gnome withe gnome-core.
