Debian install - system hanging

So I just put in a 6 gig hard drive in my P200 laptop.  When installing Debian, I get to "Detecting Hardware to find CD-ROM drives".  It gets 84% done and then hangs on "Loading module 'ide-disk' for 'Linux ATA DISK'".  If was able to load 'ide-generic' fine.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be and what to do about it?

Thanks a bunch!

John
