Really? So Thinkpads don't have closeable lids? :)

Granted, each laptop has its own idiosyncracies, but most have lids, power buttons, and many have "sleep" buttons as well. With ACPI, we could have any of these events trigger a transition to a variety of sleep states (standby, software suspend, shutdown, etc).

Now, my *ultimate* goal would be to have a package which knew about the peculiarities of many models of laptop and had pre-configurations for each one. So, for an Inspiron 41xx, you could define an action for the little "Dell" button next to the power button, etc.

So, to recap, I think a good start would be to make some scripts which would support the features found in the vast majority of laptops.
