I have the same laptop, and had the same problem.
What I did may have been overkill but it worked.

Add to /etc/modules the snd_* modules you need.

My /etc/modules looks like this:

i8k
agpgart
snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97-codec
snd_nm256
snd_pcm
snd_timer
snd_page_alloc
gameport
snd_mpu401_uart
snd_rawmidi
snd_seq_device
snd
soundcore
snd_mixer_oss
snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_oss
ide-cd
speedstep_ich
psmouse
nvidia
rtc

Sound should work after this.
