How odd.  Personally, I turned on the ALSA options for my card, the OSS
emulation options, then installed the ALSO output plugin for xine and
xmms.

At that point it just worked(tm).

There are drivers for prism 2 and 2.5 hardware in the kernel, but
neither the HostAP or wlan-ng drivers have been merged.  So, I had the
mini-PCI wireless working with the kernel prism driver, but patched in
HostAP later for added features.
