Switching between the 2.6 and 2.4 kernels is easy.  You need to upgrade a few 
things and most importantly you need to install module-init-tools.  If you 
fail to do this then 2.6 won't work (but 2.4 will still work fine and you can 
have it setup to dual-boot).

Going to 2.6 usually means going to ALSA sound, which means that sound stops 
working until you can figure out how to get it going again.  ALSA drivers are 
significantly different from OSS drivers, I have a Thinkpad 600E that has no 
sound because I haven't yet got ALSA to work with it's audio device...

As for wireless, my Wireless cardbus card works fine with 2.6.
