I think this may not a generic _nvidia problem_. While I upgrade my kernel from 2.4.x to 2.6.x, the same problem appeared.Last time I apt-geted the kernel source code 2.6.3-2, compiled for my debian sid, with CONFIG_FB, CONFIG_FB_NEOMAGIC, and CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE configured( My laptop is the old Thinkpad 600X with an graphics card Neomagic MagicMedia 256ZX). While booting, everything went OK (128 cols x 48 lines with 1024x768), but the logo disappeared (CONFIG_LOGO and CONFIG_LOGO_LINUX_VGA16 had already configured). Then when I switched from X to console, the screen went red and green:( A google search revealed the same situation had been reported early in 2.6.3-rc3:

This must be a bug in framebuffer console driver. The guys on fb driver are working on fb on ATI card and not pay enough attention on other cards(?). You could just unconfig CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE and recompile your 2.6.x kernel, or use 2.4.x.

Later when I noticed the problem I upgraded all the nvidia & xserver bits to unstable in an attempt to solve the problem but this did not work. I can spot nothing in the syslog or XFree86.0.log (or any log for that matter) that gives me a clue as to what the problem is, it looks as if the system just stops.
