it's no debian specific problem. The problem is APIC (not ACPI). There
almost all Dell's are a bit broken.I had the same problem. You can try
to use noapic at bootoption but in my case it didn't help (did read
somewhere that even with noapic it wouldn't be totally of but I have no
clue).What did help was a kernel a bit newer. 2.4.20 or 21 should do.
Since then the kernel switches it off himself when he sees a Dell and
everything works fine.so you have to options.a) use an unofficial debian
installer with a newer kernelb) compile a kernel without apic and use
this one to installperhaps you also have more luck then I with noapic as
kernel option during startup.
