Do you have something similart to this high ut in your /etc/pcmcia/config?
If not, add it:

  device "orinoco_cs"
    class "network"
    module "hermes", "orinoco", "orinoco_cs"
    opts "pc_debug=7"

Watch then what's comming out in /var/log/{kern.log,syslog}, as you:

  # /etc/init.d/pcmcia restart

What does:

  # iwconfig eth1

tell you?

Do you see something similar to this:

  Warning: Driver for device eth1 has been compiled with version 13
  of Wireless Extension, while this program is using version 16.
  Some things may be broken...
