beamer with thinkpad

Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing a IBM Thinkpad T40, but it is necessary
for me to use a beamer. 
In Austin Murphys description how to install debian/knoppix on a T40 I
founnd the remark:"Video out: Reportedly this will not work due to a
contract between ATI and MacroVision and DMCA stuff."

I haven't found any other pages about T40 and the use of a beamer, is
there a way to enable the video out and use a beamer?
