I have exactly the same problem with my compaq n600c with 1400x105 screen
and ati m6 graphic card
really anoying untill i decided to connect it to a normal moninot uring
install which solved the problem.... after setting the screen up everything
worked fin after the installation an d no monitor

otherwise i suggest the netinst with 2.4 kernel of debian woody, with that
one i ddidnt had any problems
