trackpad/button vs. external mouse

hi all,

i'm making progress on this dell inspiron 8000 install, little by
little.  my latest task is to make the external usb mouse i have
plugged into my laptop work!

right now, both the built-in button mouse and trackpad work fine.
but, no matter how i configure the external mouse (that is, no matter
how many times i run gpmconfig), i can't seem to get any response out
of the external one.

do i need to do something funny to get this one to work?  i'd much
rather have an external mouse!
