Re: X displays a blank screen on my Dell Latitude

I?m a newbie in Linux so excuse me if I?m asking stupid questions.

I'm having the same problem installing Xfree86-4.1.0-16 on a Dell Latitude
CPi D266XT as described by Brian Kendig (see below). As I see, the problem
lies alone in the Xserver and not in GNOME since I have not installed any
window manager yet.
The two errors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log only concern the mouse but the
"AllowMouseOpenFail" option does not seem to help (I?m wondering if Brian
got it to work).

I also tried the two options:
	Option "XaaNoScanlineWriteRect"
	Option "XaaNoScanlineCPUToScreenColorExpandFill"
in the Device section as was recommended for Xfree86-4.1.0-15 at a RedHat
list:
https://listman.redhat.com/pipermail/xfree86-list/2002q1/000334.html
Nothing seems to help.

At boot I need to start in text-console since the system stalls when loading
XDM. I managed to stop loading XDM by commenting out the one line in
/etc/X11/default-display-manager. When testing the Xserver I just do startx.
I don?t know if this is a problem. Would there be a more elegant way of
doing this?

If anyone would like to help me fix the problem, what information do you
need? The hardware specification, the /etc/X11/Xf86Config-4 file, the
/var/log/XFree86.0.log or anything else?

Best regards
Peter Brauer
