these options are for auto_spawn.  the esd you are seeing is the one
started by gnome when it starts up.  in your gnome control center,
tell it to _not_ start the sound server.  then it won't run as default
and it'll be auto_spawned for any program which needs it.

btw, what are the different auto_spawn options?  i've only ever used
`1', and ultimately, esd gets tangled up occassionally trying to
autospawn one (it seems) while there is already one running.  it
wreaks all havoc on mozilla and the stupid flash plugin.
