I have had success using CompactFlash devices, which act like an IDE
device, through the Linux PCMCIA system.

The only caveat was that the PCMCIA IDE support *must* be built as a
module -- it never detected the hardware when built in.

OTOH you don't specify anything about your hardware so it's hard to know
what may or may not work for you.
